Enter Miami rap group Rolling Stoned... A group of 5 cannabis loving MC's blending a variety of southern, alternative, and underground rap creating a movement of positivity, weed advocacy, and ill Hip-Hop.

We had the chance to catch up with Rolling Stoned members Marii Jane, Joey Duz, Salazar, and Shottie and asked the some questions about their upcoming Space Cake LP, the role of weed in their creative process, the music industry in South Florida, and more.

Can you tell us about the first time you smoked weed?

Shottie: I was 14...my homie bought a dime bag of some bullshit regs & we
rolled up two poor excuses for joints. We smoked them at the lake and
we been high ever since!

Salazar: It was under a canal bridge wit my homies in 93.

Marii Jane: I had to be about 12 years old up to mischievious behavior with my
brother Heber. We watched our older cousins and uncle smoke everyday.
We also knew where their roach stash was, so we started going in on
their roaches. My uncle always wondered where they went.

Does weed help or slow down your creative process?

Shottie: I wouldn't know because I'm always high when I create.

Salazar: It boosts my creative process but aside from music it demotivates the fuck outa me. Lol!!

Marii Jane: Like we say in our rolling stoned quotes "the better the weed, the
better the music"

What's your favorite strain of bud?

Joey Duz: Cherry Kush

Shottie: That's a great question. I'll give you three. Sour Headband, Louis
XIII and there was a strain I smoked in LA called "Walther Kush" that
was going for like $35 a gram. It was insane. Oh, and Skywalker
OG...this is a really tough question, can we move on?

What's your favorite way to consume cannabis?

Joey Duz: I personally like to rip the gravity (bong) for breakfast, I also like rice paper.
Shottie: Volcano.

Salazar: In a Joint, Bong then vaporizer

Marii Jane: My great ole helix, volcano ofcourse, but I must admit Im a blunt
smoker. DUtches and swisher sweets all day

Which member of the Rolling Stoned smokes the most?

Joey Duz: Shottie never quits

Shottie: I nominate myself.

Salazar: Hard to tell its between me and Shottie for sure

Marii Jane: Tough question, all of us are heavy stoners. I gotta say Shottie,
recording with him I always end up sleep on his couch.

Favorite weed munchies?

Joey Duz: Spacecake and guayaba con queso blanco.

Shottie: Roscoe's Chicken n' Waffles. Stacey's Pita Chips. Peanut Butter Cookie

Salazar: Churracsco with rice malanga and black beans

Marii Jane: Fruit roll ups, Reese's Puffs, Sushi, just about anything I can get
when Im high, lol

Some people are against legalizing weed because they feel that big companies would take over the market and basically take jobs away from local pot dealers and growers. What are your thoughts on this?

Shottie: Don't legalize, just decriminalize. Keep the production and the
profit in the streets.

Salazar: There gonna tax it the dealers on da street wont I think it could go either way.

Marii Jane: Im all for legalization, I truly think it's a bunch of political crap.
Give it some years the president will be rolling up before his speech.

It seems like "Stoner Rap" (as some people are calling it) has become a fad in Hip Hop these days. But what some of the younger generation may not know is that "Stoner Rap" has existed since at least the 90's with artists like Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Redman. Can you elaborate on this and tell us what is your favorite weed inspired rap song?

Shottie: I don't think there's such a thing as "stoner rap". The artists you
mentioned are stoners who happen to rap, but they do much more than
"weed music". That being said, my favorite weed song of all time is
"How High" by Redman & Method Man. The original album version,
though.

Salazar: I thinks Method and Redman got this with "How High"… no need for explanations.

Marii Jane: I've always been in love with that scarface "mary jane" track thats
how I feel about my good ole mario.

How would you describe Rolling Stoned's sound and how is it different or similar to other recent music releases?

Shottie: We sound the way Sour Diesel tastes.

Salazar: Its a new vibe but with old school ingredients.

Marii Jane: I think we will stand out the beats are funky, Music will always be
compared but i think we're a very unique group. Everyone is different and has alot to bring to the table. As far as saying who we sound
like , I cant say a name I dont think we sound like anyone.

Working in a group must be different than working as a solo artist. How does this project differ from your solo work in terms of sound and creative approach?

Shottie: It's not as internal. When I do my solo stuff, I start from square
one & build everything myself. With the group dynamic, it's more
about throwing out ideas and seeing who's ideas click together.

Salazar: Im known for being a spanish Mc so it's another ball game.

Marii Jane: Theres no work like team work! SO def its no different than solo
projects, Except that it's not all about me it about my team! Same
passion, same dedication and effort to make nothing but bangers.

So far, what's your favorite song on the Rolling Stoned album?

Shottie: I like "Medicated" because all five of us are on it.

Salazar: So Addictive

Marii Jane: I like them all but i truly enjoyed creating and delivering "in the
sky" thats my baby! I think shottie killed that hook!

How would you describe the Hip Hop scene in South Florida, what are some of it's pro's and con's?

Shottie: There's alot of talented artists, but a very limited audience. 75% of
the people in the crowd at these local shows are artists themselves.

Salazar: Everybody is basically full of shit next question.

Marii Jane: Well the industry is making noise out here which is great. Wasn't like
this before so we gotta thank god for all the oppurtunities. I always
say tho people are more supportive out of my city. Everyone out here
is a crab in a bucket all for themselves, but hey who cares we will

Can you tell us more about your work as a solo artist? What other projects are you currently working on?

Shottie: My solo project Life After Love produced entirely by myself is coming
out very soon. I feel silly describing my own shit, so give it a
listen & try to describe it yourself.

Salazar: Im working on a throwback mixtape with the cream of the crop in Miami to set up my first solo album $panglish.

Marii Jane: I just released my very first street album titled "420" produced by
the label im from Purple Label Ent, so im promoting it and pushing it
to the next level. Im also involved in 3 solo project all which i will
state very little about because I want to surprise the people. I will
say im very busy and my mind is focused on my career , like never
before!

As an artist, where do you see yourself next year?

Shottie: Banging someone famous. She doesn't even have to be attractive. Just famous.

Salazar: Defenitley in a better place that Im know Ima leave that in Gods hands.

Marii Jane: Alot more established, def doing more shows out of my state, and
moving my way into mainstream music, the goal is to do world-wide
tours, and buy my momma that dream house. SO work hard, and sleep when
you die!

What your thoughts on the current state of the music industry? Do you think people should pay for music? What is your opinion on free downloading?

Shottie: Music is too easy to get these days for artists to expect profiting
off sales. There's other ways to make money off music. My opinion on
free downloading is, if it's out there people will get it. I know I
have and I will.

Salazar: I think its bullshit thats what mixtapes are for the artist gives the mixtapes for free to then sell the album thats how I see it.

Marii Jane: I think theres nothng we can do to avoid free-downloads. Technology is
at its best albums get leaked before release dates.Theres many other
ways of making money with your music and career. So you can't hate the
free-downloads these days . I tell you this much personally my
favorite artists I will go and grab their cd out of respect for the
hustle.

What new artists and new music do enjoy listening to?

Shottie: Grafh, Saigon, Odd Future, Royce. I like rappers who actually rap.

Salazar: I like Drake he's tight. Other than that nobody cuz I really dont listen to the radio too much its full of caca..

Marii Jane: I stay bumping my pac, outkast, field mobb, trick daddy, etc, etc. New
faces I would have to go with Big K.R.I.T , J Cole, Kreashawn, Drake
but I apprecaite all genres and good music.

Marii, can you tell us how you hooked up with the Rolling Stoned?

Marii Jane: Well I was one of the last to join i been titled the "queen" I met
salazar we always facebooked each other, he invited me to the studio.
Where I met shottie, we vibed laced a track and the chemistry among
all was fabulous. Very few people I can sit in their studios and we
lace a banger right away. I was asked to join , I took it as big honor
and here I am.

Marii, what are some of the pros and cons of being a female MC? What other female artists do you draw inspiration from?

Marii Jane: Well it is a man's world and industry first and fore most. So I
realize my efforts have to exceed some expectations. Theres always a
jerk that wants to get in your pants. I truly think it no different in
the corporate world or anywhere else. I make it my duty to be
assertive and demand my respect. I have not encountered too many crazy
situations I have had a few tho. In my mind its business never
pleasure! Im not here to be a cute face, I'm working to establish a
legacy!

Salazar, you are known as one of the best Latin rappers in Miami if not in the the entire Latin America, BUT in this project you rap mostly in English. Is this the first official English release? Why did you choose to switch languages? How does your English rap differ from your Spanish rap?

Salazar: Well its not really my first time doing it in English Im kinda fusing it together and creating a new style it differs alot tho cuz my style is completely different in English .

So we were surfing through the schematic.net a kool electronic record label who we've been familiar with since the late 90's in Miami and came across this rad vid scored by Phoenecia.

Smother is a twisted Fruedian inspired 26 minute flick by Luis Gispert about a boy, his nightmares, and attachment to his mother among other things. This short film had us pretty confused but the visuals and appearance from Manolo (Scarface) complimented the kush being burned quite well.

This is part of Phonecia's album Echelon Mall or as they call it, 'an album of visual accompaniments translated into song form: cinema for the ears.'

Here's the story on singer Kile Atwater. He was discovered singing on YouTube vid and practically began his recording career last month. Since then, the 19 yr old singer has released 2 singles and promises to release an entire EP this summer. Not bad for a month's work.

On The Other Side, a song about moving away from home to chase your dreams was our favorite track of the two, so naturally we listed it first. The next selection 2Dance is a groovy pop cut complimented by a rad 60's inspired video edited by Kile himself.

Some may also know Kile is an actor. Most recently, he can be seen on the television shows like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and How to Make it in America.

Charles Bradley - The World (Is Going Up In Flames) - Ft. Menahan Street Band

Here's a compelling story that will inspire you never to give up on your dreams. Charles Bradley turns 63 years old this year and is releasing his very first album.

Charles Bradley was born in Gaineville, Fl and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up underprivileged, Bradley is no stranger to struggle. This Vietnam vet spent most of his life as a chef and a part time musician. His story takes him hitch-hiking across the country to Alaska, 20 years in California, and eventually back to New York where his brother was murdered.

Bradley was finally discovered by Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records while playing a gig in Bed-Stuy. Roth recognized his talent and brought Bradley to Staten Island to meet the young funk band The Bullets. Bradley and group cut a few records but the band later dismantled and to form the Budos Band.

Later on, Thomas Brenneck former guitar writer and songwriter for the Bullets ended up moving to Bushwick where he reconnected with Bradley and began producing the singer in a small bedroom studio. Brenneck put together the Menahan Street Band resulting in the recording of Charles Bradley's first LP No Time For Dreaming.

This is classic soul music sung from the heart and is up o par with James Brown and Otis Redding. Bradley sings with so much conviction that you can see him holding back the tears because the music is so strong.

Vincenzo Scipioni aka UnSeeingEyes uses a statue and a glowing ball as vehicle to express the utter stupidity of today's society. The Weeknd is an R&B singer from Toronto who recently debuted his first mixtape House of Balloons this past March. The Weeknd is linked to Drake who recently quoted lyrics and posted links of the singers work via Twitter. After hearing some records off his mixtape (which is really more an album), his songs sound strikingly similar to Drake's down tempo R&B style.

This video edited by Michael Cumming with footage from x-art.com is ultra sexy and super seductive. This is an example of how a well created visual can make a good song become great. High For This uses some dubstep and electronic elements to form and R&B song that sounds sort of like a Drake meets La Roux remixed by DJ Skream.

A couple months ago The Weeknd sent the music power blogs into a frenzy. While he may or may not have an actual record deal in writing, The Weeknd is obviously an artist with a major label backing who's being marketing as if he's indie. This is a seriously f^*king rad video shot on a Canon T2i, and edited in Vegas Pro 9 by by Madison, WI videographer Joe Ramos.

Check the mad scientist in his laboratory tweaking knobs and banging out beats on his typewriter while blueprints flash on screen alongside more tripped out visuals. The dark low lit scenes and overall ambiance reminded us of those type of videos the band Tool would do. Man Mantis makes a real short appearance in his masked outfit adding another layer of complexity to this already intense vid.

Man Mantis is a producer and multimedia artist who resides in Madison, WI. Red Dragonfly is the fourth cut off his latest EP Sea Ambulance and he's soon to drop an LP Cities Without Houses with the homeys at World Around Records a super kool label who we definitely co-sign.

The Sea Ambulance EP is down tempo instrumental music done with superb taste. Just enough synth and drum along with the proper sonic layers draw you into a zone. This is music you can think and imagine to where the beats almost become visual. We draw some similarities to Flying Lotus in terms of aesthetic and sound, yet Mantis has a style that is uniquely his own. Two thumbs up for the addition of vocals and raps on the Sea Ambulance remix by DJ Pain 1 it added a nice touch.

Remember when P was one if not the best rappers in NY? Post Infamous circa Hell On Earth? Right up there with Big, Jay, Nas and them. Perhaps the youngers readers don't remember so let us refresh you.

Prodigy and Mobb Deep were among the pioneers of violent east coast rap. This circa 1996 DJ Clue freestyle over Big Pun's - You Aint A Killa instrumental is as raw as it gets. Where most rappers fail at portraying a tough street image Prodigy is very good at conveying his pain and aggression to his listeners in a very authentic way that is believable to the listener.

Unfortunately, somewhere after the Jay-Z diss and the G-Unit deal, Prodigy somehow got lost in the shuffle. While he made a strong comeback with Alchemist and Return of the Mac LP, Prodigy has yet to rap up to this caliber again. We'd like to welcome Prodigy home from a near 3 year bid. There's no doubt he still got it in him and we're looking forward to more classic material.

Trailer Limon - Special Dedication: The B-Sides

Here's some tasty tracks by Trailer Limon from San Fransisco.

Special Dedication: The B-Sides is a electro funk sounding record that's start off with "Sweet Delight" a mid tempo instrumental track driven by a soul style sample.

The next track "Call Me" is a funk style reminiscent of Roger Troutman with a vocoder on the vocals throughout the song. This song has a real nice build up before the vocals kick in and is one of the records that you can keep on loop for a while.

Following is "Sittin on the Corner With You" our favorite pick. This record is pretty rad. It's funk disco sound reminded us of Chromeo (in a good way). Definitely a get up and dance song.

The next song "The End?" is where the EP takes a turn. The track starts off with a solid rythm with promise of a good song but then the direction of the lyrics and music begin to change the direction in a way which in our opinion did not compliment the overall sound of the record.

Last was "The Don't Have To Know" a laid back instrumental style record with almost a Hip Hop sound that completes the EP real smoothly.

Keep your ears on Trailor Limon he's got some dope shit.
